A favorite amongst sock knitters, Opal sock yarn is both soft & durable. Each unique collection of self-patterning colorways make sock knitting fun & interesting. Of course, Opal yarns are also great for shawls, wraps, hats/scarves, and even baby garments!
Opal is a medium sized yarn printing company based in Hechingen / Germany. The entire production (printing, washing, steaming and balling) including sales and marketing is based in one location.
The collections are inspired by the work of artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who designed his own clothes.
"They always ask me: Mr. Hundertwasser, why are you wearing two different socks?
My typical answer: Why are you wearing two identical socks?"
The stunning colors and fresh patterns of Opal yarns are meant to support the fun of knitting and crochet as a relaxing and meaningful leisure activity, and to encourage people to show off a little more individuality and extravagance. The common composition of Opal yarns is 75% wool / 25% polyamide in different thread sizes (4-ply, 6-ply and 8-ply). But also other compositions with polypropylene, cotton, silk or bamboo are known.
